We can see great diversity in today's religious practices. Some of us are unsettled by the differences, even despise them, some of us respect the differences, and some of us work to unify the differences, to create a oneness among ourselves and our brothers and sisters. Is this "Oneness" attainable? Is there a way in which to approach each diverse path so that unity can be achieved among them while maintaining differentiation between them?

To explore this, we will enter the realm of mystical traditions, those who seek the unmediated experience of union with the divine. Yoga, in its ultimate form, is the soul's intimate connection with the divine through the heart, the natural outpouring of hearts to one another, the human heart and the divine heart. The mystic, or yogi, is not the person who merely "knows" this experience, but one who more fully seeks to "live" this experience of divine union. The ultimate yoga for souls is to attain a state of full-heartedness - a heart that offers itself in unremitting, unconditional love in response to the divine yearning.

In this workshop, using examples of sacred texts, poetry, music, art, and other forms of expression, Graham will share what the mystical traditions reveal about the nature and varieties of relationships between humans and the divine across cultures and, and how these relationships speak to us about the nature of human relationships in general.

--- Graham M. Schweig earned his doctoral degree from Harvard University in Comparative Religion and is an associate professor of religion at Christopher Newport University, specializing in love mysticism, concentrating on religions of the heart, especially the northern Indian traditions of Vaishnavism, and has been practicing various forms of yoga for close to forty years. Graham's ultimate interest is to find religious truths from within Indic traditions that contribute powerful symbols that speak beyond their religious boundaries, moving religion toward world peace. His newest book Bhagavad Gita: The Beloved Lord's Secret Love Song (Harper, 2007) is being highly acclaimed by both academics and practitioners. Published author, internationally renowned scholar, and heart-centered yogi, Graham has a unique role in bridging worlds of knowledge, namely the academia and practical, eastern and western religious paths, the philosopher and the practioner, the head and the heart, into one full-bodied, enlightening and accessible presentation.

A message from Arci....

When I heard Graham speak, from his humble yet commanding demeanor, the depth of understanding apparent in the clarity of his speech, and the radiance of his own love of the Divine, I could feel something deep in my heart stirring, a kindling of desire, of hope that I could actually attain a direct reciprocal loving relationship with the Divine, right here, right now - that the reason I don't experience it is due to the filters and constrains that I put on my relationship with the Divine. He is already there, loving me, fully, and with the hankering of an unrequited lover for me to just love Him back. As he repeated the words of the Divine, "For you are so much loved by me," my heart cracked, my eyes welled. And as his lecture was over, I thought "Wow, wait, no, don't go. I want more, don't stop there" So I followed him outside, blubbering over myself, and (selfishly) invited him here to Winston-Salem, using all of you as the reason of course. He graciously accepted and it went from there.

I witnessed him that night move people from several different spiritual paths. So I tried to find venues to host him which I thought would be appropriate (he has so much to offer it was hard to limit it). Unity Church saw the value of his message and agreed to host him on Sunday, July 15. I encourage you to extend your appreciation to the leaders at Unity Church for having the heart and the head to accommodate this event.
