What is kirtan - devotional chanting ?
According to Keshavacharya
dasa, Kirtan or the chanting the holy names is
one of the highest expressions of love towards
the Supreme, and one of the greatest forms of
mercy from the Supreme to the souls in this
world. It is said that when we chant these
names the Lord dances on our tongues and
manifests himself more and more in our heart.
Kirtan is a call and response flow of devotion
through music - the human voice set to ancient
ragas or tunes accompanied by the sweet sounds
of harmonium and bengali drum which leads to a
deep emotional experience. The kirtan leader
helps to pull from our heart the love we have
locked away, unknown even to ourselves. Through
the ebb and flow of this exchange between the
kirtan leader and the “audience”, we are pulled
deeper and deeper into our own hearts. The
mantras are like a rope we can use to draw
ourselves into the inner realms of the heart
where we can experience true peace, knowledge
and bliss.
